Shrewsbury Twp. mom Cara Achterberg begins online book club

“I have stacks and stacks of books to read,” lamented Cara Achterberg.

A self-described “reluctantly busy mother of three children, one large partially educated horse, 22 chickens, 2 cats, 2 hound dogs, and assorted small animals that live in aquariums,” the Shrewsbury Township resident said she often just can’t find the time.

But she realized, over 13 years of being in various book clubs, that they provided a sense of accountability for her. So she decided to start her own online group, part of her five-year-old organic living blog “Kid Friendly Organic Life.”

“I have books that have been nagging at me, staring at me for months” Achterberg said.

The final straw was a rushed morning last week when she accidentally knocked over a pile of books to be read. A few landed in the trash, and Achterberg decided that was it. She’ll begin this month with “Organic Manifesto” by Maria Rodale, with plans to write up her thoughts in the last week of May.
